S H E D D I N G

Elk are beginning to shed their velvet and while it looks painful, it does not hurt. Mature bulls in good shape generally shed their velvet in early August. Younger bulls start this process soon after and yearlings, even later. The timing of the velvet shedding depends on age, hormonal levels and body condition.
